European Union Might Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Official States

The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals working on combating digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.

EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce US companies to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider ongoing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
